While Wimbledon has a reputation for being pristine and polite, there have been several incidents over the years which have seen top players fined tens of thousands for unsportsmanlike conduct. Fabio Fognini has been among the offenders - saying he wished a bomb would drop on the All England Club. Meanwhile, others have been fined for spitting at fans and ruining the grass courts.

With Wimbledon just days away, players will be competing for a staggering top prize of 2.35 million awarded to the champion. But some could end up getting fined for issues of unsportsmanlike conduct, as Nick Kyrgios received the biggest bill 12 months ago. Ahead of the tournament, Express Sport is taking a look back at some of the biggest fines.
Kyrgios wasnt the first player to be fined for spitting at fans during The Championships, as he received a 7,900 ($10,000) bill for the offence last year after his opening match. On top of that, he was slapped with an additional 3.2k ($4k) penalty after his fiery third-round clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas while the Greek star got a 7.9k ($10k) fine for firing a ball into the stands in anger.
Back in 2010, retired former world No 26 Victor Hanescu was given a 17k ($21.5k) bill for spitting at spectators before he forfeited the match against Daniel Brands in the fifth set, walking off court. After blowing four match points in the third set, he was foot-faulted twice, spat and swore while 0-2 down in the fifty set and shook hands with his opponent a game later, giving up the tie.

Fognini has received multiple fines at the All England Club over the years, including an eye-watering 21.8k ($27.5k) made up of three different penalties during his win over Alex Kuznetsov in 2014. He later received another 5.9k ($7.5k) bill for abuse of a tournament official.
In 2019, the Italian was heard saying: I wish a bomb would explode on this club, during his third-round defeat to Tennys Sandgren, earning him a 2.4k ($3k) penalty. Other fines have been handed out when players have damaged the grass - often by smashing their rackets into the ground.
Serena Williams
was presented with a 7.9k ($10k) bill on two occasions for ruining the grass with her racket - in 2016 during a match and in 2019 on a practice court. Britains Heather Watson had a larger fine of 9.5k ($12k) for doing the same during a match in 2016.
